Nick and David are proud to be an active part of the local community, regularly taking part in events and lending their support wherever they can.
Whether it’s attending village fetes, supporting local charities, or simply being a familiar face in the neighbourhood, they believe that true service starts with genuine involvement.
Their commitment goes beyond their work, it’s about building lasting relationships and being there for people, both in times of need and celebration.
In 2023 David was awarded a trophy as a runner up in the BBC Radio Cornwall Awards. There are many people who are nominated and to make it as a finalist is such an achievement and recognition of all the hard work that David does in the community in which both David and Nick live and work. We are very proud of David and his award at the BBC Radio Cornwall Make A Difference Awards. Although much of this focus was for the Christmas day dinner David organises it also recognises that David works very hard in the community, in a lot of different roles, and gives up a lot of time for the benefit of others.
Brass Band music is common in mining areas, and the Clay area is no different. Indeed 2026 will see the 100th Annual West of England Bandsman's Festival known and Bugle Band Contest. Roche Brass Band established in 2012 out on an annual Last Night of the Prom's concert and have asked David for the last three years to lead the singing of Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem. The Band perform various numbers before the audience grab their flags and join in with the singing. A great evening, which Roche Brass Band put on to raise money to support the band in their various endeavours. There are many causes that David finds himself calling Bingo for. Sometimes David organises a Prize Bingo to raise money for a cause close to his heart. Occasionally someone will ask David to call the numbers for a prize bingo they want to organise for their own good cause. But whatever the cause, David has been turning up at various places with his Bingo machine for over eighteen years.
When we were contacted by Lisa who was organising a Pensioners Christmas Lunch in Treviscoe Community Centre, we were only to happy to take a couple of hours out of the office. Nick took his keyboard and David brought along Carol Sheets. After everyone had enjoyed Turkey and Christmas pudding, Nick played while David led the singing of some favourite carols.
Harvest Festival is a big part of the circle of Rural Life. Robert Stephen Hawker, the eccentric Parson of Morwenstow in coastal North Cornwall, is credited with creating the Harvest Festival we celebrate today. Every year David gets asked to be the Auctioneer at Rescorla to sell of the produce. He really gets into the role, and always makes it fun. And be careful not to move or nod as you may find you have bought something you didn't want.
Remembrance Sunday is one of those days that communities come together. For many years David has been invited to be part of the Parish Council Service at Treverbyn War Memorial. Nick is always there to lay a wreath on behalf of Wedlake Funeral Home. Being part of the community at times like this is very important to us. We are always happy to help out where we can.
